SMEs in Mexico

Based on this and a literature review, a diagnosis of the competitiveness of SMEs in Mexico is developed, which is complemented by a series of public policy recommendations with technically sound, financially affordable and viable proposals in the Mexican political-economic environment. This is intended to support the ongoing debate in a segment that has received many diagnoses from the fields of academia and public policy. However, this segment has not been reflected in policies that translate into SMEs with increased added value.

The main contribution of this study to the existing diagnoses of SMEs in the country is the multiplicity of voices that converge on it. The issue of competitiveness in the sector is tackled from multiple angles: regulation, institutional design, rule of law, financing, education, and educational policy, among others.

This report, made in partnership with IMCO and Quickbooks Mexico, analyzes the challenges and opportunities faced by SMEs in Mexico. It highlights the digitization and adoption of technology that companies will have to do in the coming years.

The purpose of this study is to identify the systemic obstacles SMEs face to expand and compete in the marketplace. For this, public databases were consulted, in particular the Economic Censuses of the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) and 30 interviews were carried out with owners of SMEs, businessmen, leaders of chambers and business associations, public officials at the federal level and state, investors, experts in the sector and opinion leaders.
