Trade between the US and Mexico, a close-up look

In a joint effort with Instituto Mexicano para la Competitividad, the US-Mexico Foundation presents a close-up look at trade between Mexico and the United States.

Since January 1993, trade between Mexico and various countries and territories worldwide has increased by seven. While in 1993 trade flows to and from Mexico had a value of 117.3 billion dollars, in 2020 (despite the economic crisis caused by COVID-19) their value amounted to 800.9 billion dollars. Between those years, trade flows grew at an average annual rate of 7.4%.

Due to the COVID-19 crisis, in May 2020 exports and imports registered a fall of (-) 52.9% and (-) 38.3%, respectively, in relation to those observed in the month of March. Despite the magnitude of the fall, by September they had practically recovered to their pre-crisis levels. Given that exports recovered faster than imports, this translated into a surplus of a magnitude not seen before (since at least 1993) in the balance of trade between the months of June and December of that year.

In 2020, Mexico's trade flows (exports plus imports) to and from the United States and Canada represented 65.7% ($ 525.9 billion) of its total trade flows ($ 800.0 billion).
